Week 14: Easter

March 28, 2021

This week’s Come, Follow Me lesson shifts from the usual focus on specific sections of the Doctrine and Covenants and concentrates instead on the subject of Easter. It suggests, “As you prepare to commemorate the Savior’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday, ponder how modern revelation has deepened your faith that Jesus Christ is the Only Begotten Son of God and the Redeemer of the world.” To aid you in your pondering, we have extracted a few verses from sections of the Doctrine and Covenants that relate to this eternally important subject.

The Gift of God

Doctrine and Covenants 20:21: “Wherefore, the Almighty God gave his Only Begotten Son, as it is written in those scriptures which have been given of him.”

Doctrine and Covenants 34:1‒3: “My son Orson, hearken and hear and behold what I, the Lord God, shall say unto you, even Jesus Christ your Redeemer; The light and the life of the world, a light which shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehendeth it not; Who so loved the world that he gave his own life, that as many as would believe might become the sons of God. Wherefore you are my son.”

Doctrine and Covenants 45:4: “Father, behold the sufferings and death of him who did no sin, in whom thou wast well pleased; behold the blood of thy Son which was shed, the blood of him whom thou gavest that thyself might be glorified.”

Doctrine and Covenants 138:1‒4: “On the third of October, in the year nineteen hundred and eighteen, I sat in my room pondering over the scriptures; And reflecting upon the great atoning sacrifice that was made by the Son of God, for the redemption of the world; And the great and wonderful love made manifest by the Father and the Son in the coming of the Redeemer into the world; That through his atonement, and by obedience to the principles of the gospel, mankind might be saved.”

The Savior’s Suffering

Doctrine and Covenants 18:11: “For, behold, the Lord your Redeemer suffered death in the flesh; wherefore he suffered the pain of all men, that all men might repent and come unto him.”

Doctrine and Covenants 19:16‒19: “For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent; But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I; Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit—and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink—Nevertheless, glory be to the Father, and I partook and finished my preparations unto the children of men.”

Doctrine and Covenants 20:22: “He suffered temptations but gave no heed unto them.”

Doctrine and Covenants 45:4: “Father, behold the sufferings and death of him who did no sin, in whom thou wast well pleased; behold the blood of thy Son which was shed, the blood of him whom thou gavest that thyself might be glorified.”

Doctrine and Covenants 76:69: “These are they who are just men made perfect through Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, who wrought out this perfect atonement through the shedding of his own blood.”

The Crucifixion

Doctrine and Covenants 20:23: “He was crucified, died, and rose again the third day.”

Doctrine and Covenants 21:9: “Jesus was crucified by sinful men for the sins of the world, yea, for the remission of sins unto the contrite heart.””

Doctrine and Covenants 35:2: “I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who was crucified for the sins of the world, even as many as will believe on my name, that they may become the sons of God, even one in me as I am one in the Father, as the Father is one in me, that we may be one.”

Doctrine and Covenants 45:51‒53: “And then shall the Jews look upon me and say: What are these wounds in thine hands and in thy feet? Then shall they know that I am the Lord; for I will say unto them: These wounds are the wounds with which I was wounded in the house of my friends. I am he who was lifted up. I am Jesus that was crucified. I am the Son of God. And then shall they weep because of their iniquities; then shall they lament because they persecuted their king.”

Doctrine and Covenants 46:13: “To some it is given by the Holy Ghost to know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that he was crucified for the sins of the world.”

Doctrine and Covenants 53:2: “Behold, I, the Lord, who was crucified for the sins of the world, give unto you a commandment that you shall forsake the world.”

Doctrine and Covenants 54:1: “1 Behold, thus saith the Lord, even Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, even he who was crucified for the sins of the world.”

Doctrine and Covenants 76:41‒42: “That he came into the world, even Jesus, to be crucified for the world, and to bear the sins of the world, and to sanctify the world, and to cleanse it from all unrighteousness; That through him all might be saved whom the Father had put into his power and made by him.”

Doctrine and Covenants 110:4: “I am the first and the last; I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain; I am your advocate with the Father.”

The Resurrection

Doctrine and Covenants 18:12‒13: “And he hath risen again from the dead, that he might bring all men unto him, on conditions of repentance. And how great is his joy in the soul that repenteth!”

Doctrine and Covenants 20:23‒25: “He was crucified, died, and rose again the third day. And ascended into heaven, to sit down on the right hand of the Father, to reign with almighty power according to the will of the Father; That as many as would believe and be baptized in his holy name, and endure in faith to the end, should be saved.”

Doctrine and Covenants 133:54‒55: “Yea, and Enoch also, and they who were with him; the prophets who were before him; and Noah also, and they who were before him; and Moses also, and they who were before him; And from Moses to Elijah, and from Elijah to John, who were with Christ in his resurrection.”

In addition to describing this first resurrection, the Doctrine and Covenants contains numerous scriptures about future resurrections that will occur beginning at the time of Christ’s Second Coming.

The Atonement

Doctrine and Covenants 20:25‒27: “That as many as would believe and be baptized in his holy name, and endure in faith to the end, should be saved—Not only those who believed after he came in the meridian of time, in the flesh, but all those from the beginning, even as many as were before he came, who believed in the words of the holy prophets, who spake as they were inspired by the gift of the Holy Ghost, who truly testified of him in all things, should have eternal life, As well as those who should come after, who should believe in the gifts and callings of God by the Holy Ghost, which beareth record of the Father and of the Son.”

Doctrine and Covenants 29:1: “Listen to the voice of Jesus Christ, your Redeemer, the Great I Am, whose arm of mercy hath atoned for your sins.”

Doctrine and Covenants 76:23‒24: “He is the Only Begotten of the Father . . . by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.”

Doctrine and Covenants 76:69: “These are they who are just men made perfect through Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, who wrought out this perfect atonement through the shedding of his own blood.”

Doctrine and Covenants 76:22‒24: “And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives! For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father.”

Doctrine and Covenants 110:4: “I am the first and the last; I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain; I am your advocate with the Father.”
